Durian as the ultimate add-on for everything
Despite smelling like damp rotting sneakers, a "durian craze" has taken over social media, with the hashtag #DurianBuffet gaining rapid popularity. Many durian-themed drink shops are starting to catch people's attention, and a durian burger has garnered significant buzz on RED, with many users marvelling at the idea of eating durian in this new way.
Durian has long been a favourite among Chinese consumers. The popularity of durian pizza has already shown this trend. China accounted for 91% of the world's durian consumption according to HSBC analysis last year. In 2023, China imported over 1.42 million tons of fresh durian, a 73% increase from the previous year, with an import value of ¥47.2 billion ($6.6 billion).
