In today's milk tea industry sugar is often viewed negatively, seeing ‘low sugar’ become the default choice for young people's health needs. However, the very sweet Thai milk tea, with its unique sweetness and flavour, still attracts many consumers. As of July 24, there are over 330,000 posts related to ‘Thai milk tea’ on Xiaohongshu, and videos on the same topic have garnered over 670 million views on Douyin. Thai milk tea brands like ChunLai (春莱), Badila (芭堤啦), and Big Beard Iced Cocoa (大胡子冰可可) have been rapidly expanding in recent years.
Founded in 2020 in Kunming, the Thai milk tea brand ChunLai specializes in Thai milk tea and Laotian coffee, offering a unique Southeast Asian style. Founded in 2019 and also originating from Kunming, the Thai milk tea brand Badi La focuses on Thai milk tea and coffee. According to the brand's official website, it has opened over 200 stores across China. Besides homegrown Thai milk tea brands, Thai brands have also entered the Chinese market. For example, in 2023, the trendy Thai brand Big Beard Iced Cocoa opened its first store in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.
