Trending in China: Southerners travel to the other end of China for a freezing New Year holiday

During this month’s New Year’s Day holiday, the number of people entering and leaving China has returned to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, according to statistics from the National Immigration Administration. Domestically, there's been a surge in popularity for ice and snow tourism in Northeast China, particularly in Harbin. The majority of travellers have travelled the farthest, from southern China.  They have been given a cute nickname ‘Southern small potato’ to describe southerners who have relatively short stature and are not used to cold weather.

Renowned for its time honoured, unique and magnificent winter landscape, Harbin has capitalized on the tourism boom. In recent years, Harbin has actively promoted itself in the holiday tourism market by enhancing various scenic spots and snow related activities. The city saw 3.05 million tourist visits during the three day New Year's Day holiday and generated ¥5.91 billion ($830 million) in tourism revenue. Visitors are impressed by the warm hospitality of locals and the thoughtful and even pampering services and activities, making their experiences memorable lessons tourism operators anywhere could take on board!
