Shanghai's new social scene: home bars provide a relaxed after-work hangout option for youth

In addition to bistros, young professionals in Shangahai now have a fresh way to enjoy their free time after work—home bars. These are unique spaces opened by homeowners who transform part of their living space into a cozy bar. Unlike traditional bars, which can be loud and intrusive, home bars offer a cozy and inviting atmosphere that feels like being at home. They are especially appealing to the introverts who find it easier to socialize in such a setting. Most home bars operate on an all-you-can-drink model, charging a flat fee per person, with prices ranging from ¥100 to 300 ($14-42) depending on the season. They're typically open from 8 pm to 2 am, allowing guests to enjoy various drinks throughout the evening.

Nevertheless, the concept of the home bar treads a fine line between being a commercial venture and a residential pastime. Many home bar operators have started to cease their operations as they reorganise, moving their locations to quiet commercial office buildings. While transitioning to fully commercial bars, they strive to keep the essence of a homely vibe in their decor and ambiance as much as possible.

A home bar owner shared, "I aim to create a super relaxed spot where folks can unwind after a day's work. By selecting our customers carefully, we maintain the home bar's friendly atmosphere, offering everyone a high-value, joyful, and safe drinking environment."
