What happened?

Douyin influencers donned waiter uniforms at hotpot restaurant chain of Haidilao to perform the viral "Kemusan" (or "Subject Three") dance originating from a lively wedding celebration in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

How it went:

The video scored over a billion views on Douyin in a week. This unconventional dance stirred the curiosity of youth, giving Haidilao substantial social traction.

Why it was successful

The dance plays on nostalgia of the once popular Chinese "Social Shake." Just as importantly, it provides a fun distraction from increasing pressures facing youth in their work or academic lives.
